Sponsorship Program

JAHAN's members go to Kabul and photograph these children, collect their names, ages, and a small biography about them and make it available on-line, so you can learn more about these children and begin to help directly. The children selected for this program are not all orphans, but they are all children living in desperate conditions and need our support.

What I am about to share with you is not a statistic, but rather a reality that deeply touched me as I began the process of gathering information on the orphans for this sponsorship program. I eagerly took out the form that I had spent over three days creating and started with the first little girl in the room. I wanted to provide as much information as I could about these children to their potential sponsors. I thought it would be nice for the sponsors to know a little about the interests, hobbies, and aspirations of each child. So I asked a 10 year old little girl what she enjoyed or liked and she just stared at me blankly, not even knowing what to answer. I continued to ask her what she wanted to be when she grew up, again she looked at me blankly, so I helped by asking: teacher, doctor, nurse, baker, etc. She looked up at me and in her soft voice said, "I'm not supposed to be anything, that's not the way things are here." I continued, not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable, so I asked about what skills she might have, and she answered that at the age of 8 she had worked as a carpet weaver, but did not like that too much, and that she also used to know how to play with dolls, but that she didn't know how to play with them anymore, because she had not had a doll in a long time... and I put the form aside realizing I would have to rethink my questions, because these children do not understand what it is to become somebody, their only goal or aspiration is to find food and survive. I hope you will join in helping these children find new hopes and aspirations.
